The project
A working home for a lodge that needed room to meet, dine and gather — and a civic face on a street of larger institutional neighbours.
The Masonic Center replaced a building the membership had outgrown, and the brief was unusually practical: lodge rooms, a banquet hall, kitchens, offices and rental space that could earn its keep between meetings.
We organised the plan around a single central hall, so the building reads as one public gesture from the street while the working rooms behind it can operate independently. Masonry and bronze-toned metal were chosen for a long service life and for the way they hold low evening light.
Design notes
Plan
One column-free hall anchors the building; every secondary room borrows daylight from it.
Envelope
Masonry and metal panels detailed for a fifty-year repaint cycle, not a ten-year one.
Use
Rental space was designed in from the start so the building works seven days a week.
